Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki dies at 93, leaving 72-year cinematic legacy

Sowcar Janaki, one of the most enduring and beloved actresses of Indian cinema, passed away on Thursday, leaving behind a remarkable 72-year career spanning five languages and over 450 films. She was 93.

Born Sankaramanchi Janaki on December 12, 1931, in the heart of Rajamahendravaram city, her journey from a radio artist to a celebrated actress inspired generations. Her family lived near Damerla Art Gallery, and her father, Sankaramanchi Venkoba Rao, worked in a paper mill. The old building where she spent her early years now houses an SBI branch, as noted by Jith Mohan Mitra, a child artist from the acclaimed films Sankarabharanam and Saptapadi.

Janaki's career began at age 13 with a brief stint at Akashvani Madras. After her marriage at 18 in 1949, she made her film debut in the Telugu movie Shavukaru, opposite legendary actor N.T. Rama Rao and directed by Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner L.V. Prasad. The film famously earned her the moniker 'Sowcar', and was later remade in Tamil as Enga Veetu Penn in 1965.

She went on to work with some of the biggest names in South Indian cinema, including Akkineni Nageswara Rao, M.G. Ramachandran, Gemini Ganesan, and Prithviraj Kapoor. She also acted alongside former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. In addition to films, she performed in over 300 stage productions directed by the renowned K. Balachander.

Janaki also had a deep connection to India's freedom movement. During 1946-47, she worked closely with social reformer Durgabai Deshmukh and served as a volunteer for Mahatma Gandhi during his visit to the Hindi Prachar Sabha in Madras—a memory she recalled with immense pride.

Her monumental contribution to cinema was recognised with the Padma Shri in 2022.

Her passing has drawn tributes from across the political and cinematic spectrum. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said he was in shock, adding that she will be remembered forever in her films. Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan, himself an actor, noted that her very first film earned her the prefix 'Sowcar' and praised her versatility in over 400 films. Minister Kandula Durgesh called her demise a great loss to the Telugu film industry, while YSR Congress chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy described it as an irreparable loss.

Nandamuri Balakrishna, son of N.T. Rama Rao, recalled his personal association with Janaki, including acting alongside her in Ram-Raheem and Vemulavada Bheemakavi, and said her death was a personal loss. Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh and BJP state president P.V.N. Madhav also offered condolences, remembering her immense contribution and her enduring place in the hearts of audiences.

For the people of Rajamahendravaram, her heritage city, and for millions of film fans, Sowcar Janaki's expressive eyes and powerful performances will remain immortal. Her life and work stand as a testament to the rich history of Indian cinema and the cultural pride of the Telugu people.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
