Back-to-Back Organ Donations in Mumbai Save Six Lives
Two families in Mumbai have given the gift of life to six patients by donating the organs of their brain-dead loved ones in separate incidents on June 29 and June 30. These donations have raised the city's total number of deceased organ donations in 2026 to 35, according to the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC).
The first donation took place on June 29 at Wockhardt Hospital, Mira Road. The donor, a 28-year-old fitter technician employed at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and a resident of Boisar, was declared brain dead after a motorcycle accident on June 25 in Tarapur. His family consented to donate his organs, leading to the retrieval of his heart, both lungs, liver, both kidneys, and bones for transplantation and tissue donation. These organs saved the lives of six patients on the waiting list.
The second donation occurred on June 30 at an undisclosed hospital, with another family choosing to donate their loved one's organs. While specific details of this case were not provided, the ZTCC confirmed that it contributed to the overall tally of 35 deceased organ donations this year.
Dr. Bharat Shah, General Secretary of ZTCC, Mumbai, said, 'We are seeing an improvement in organ donation, and we feel awareness has increased.' The ZTCC continues to coordinate such efforts, emphasizing the importance of consent and the impact of each donation.
