Andhra Pradesh Assembly Session Extended to August 20; BC Quota, APPSC Exam on Agenda

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly Business Advisory Committee (BAC) on Monday (August 17, 2026) announced that the ongoing Assembly session will continue for four more days, concluding on August 20. The decision was taken during a BAC meeting chaired by Speaker Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu, with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Ministers Payyavula Keshav and Nadendla Manohar, BJP MLA Vishnu Kumar Raju, and Government Chief Whip G.V. Anjaneyulu in attendance.

The BAC finalised the schedule for the extended session, prioritising two key matters. On Tuesday (August 18), the House will take up a discussion on reservations for Backward Classes (BC) in local body elections. This follows ongoing deliberations on representation in panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies. On Wednesday (August 19), the Assembly will discuss alleged irregularities in the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) Group-I examination, a matter that has drawn significant public attention.

In addition to these discussions, the committee decided to introduce nine ordinances in the form of Bills during the session. This is a standard legislative procedure to ensure parliamentary scrutiny of executive actions taken during the intersession period. The BAC also resolved that the Assembly will function with a working lunch, meaning proceedings will continue without a formal recess until the scheduled business for the day is completed.

The extended session reflects the government's effort to address pressing issues within the legislative framework. The discussion on BC reservations is particularly significant, as local body elections in the state have often been delayed pending clarity on reservation norms. Similarly, the APPSC Group-I examination controversy has been a matter of public interest, with candidates and civil society groups demanding transparency and accountability.

The BAC, which acts as the steering committee for legislative business, primarily determines the order and duration of the Assembly's proceedings. Monday's meeting was convened to adjust the schedule after the session was initially planned for a shorter duration. With the new timeline, the Assembly will operate for four consecutive days, allowing lawmakers to take up the designated agenda items.

The participation of the Chief Minister and senior ministers in the BAC meeting underscores the importance the government places on the legislative calendar. The inclusion of an opposition BJP MLA in the deliberations also indicates a degree of cross-party cooperation, though the main opposition parties were not represented in the meeting.

As the Assembly prepares for its extended sittings, all eyes will be on how the discussions unfold, particularly on the two headline topics. The outcomes are expected to have direct implications for local body elections and the future conduct of APPSC examinations.
