Ammonia Leak Tragedy: 16 Dead at Tamil Nadu Seafood Plant

The death toll from the ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export facility in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district rose to 16 on Saturday, according to a health department bulletin. The deceased, identified as Kabita Juanga from Odisha, died after being hospitalised earlier.

As of Saturday, 26 people – 25 women and one man – remain hospitalised. Among them, one patient is on ventilator support and nine are receiving nasal oxygen. The condition of the other 16 patients is stable. So far, 41 individuals have been discharged after treatment.

The bodies of 12 victims have been airlifted to Odisha, and two to Assam. The remains of the remaining two victims will be transported after completion of legal formalities, the bulletin added.

The incident occurred at a facility in Tiruvallur, where an ammonia leak led to the deaths of mostly women workers, many of whom were migrant labourers from Odisha and Assam. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the leak.
