Amazon CEO Meets Maharashtra CM, Announces $8.3 Billion Investment and Job Creation

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met Amazon CEO Andy Jassy in Mumbai on Wednesday to discuss the company's expanding partnership with the state. Fadnavis highlighted that Amazon chose Mumbai for its first cloud infrastructure region in India in June 2016, and their collaboration has deepened since.

During the meeting, Fadnavis noted that Amazon's commitment to Maharashtra is significant. A memorandum of understanding signed at Davos in 2025 outlined an $8.3 billion expansion in the state, which Amazon describes as its largest single-state commitment, expected to generate 83,100 jobs in India.

The Chief Minister detailed Amazon's physical infrastructure in Maharashtra, including six fulfilment centres and over 200 delivery stations. He said more than 22,000 entrepreneurs and small businesses in the state are exporting to customers worldwide, with Thane, Mumbai, Pune, and Kolhapur among India's top 50 exporting cities on Amazon.

Fadnavis also appreciated Amazon's social initiatives in Maharashtra's environment: a Rs 10 crore investment in the Vaitarna hydro basin, expected to replenish 1.3 billion litres of water annually and benefit 700 farmers; planting 300,000 trees in the Western Ghats; and investing US$1.2 million to restore flamingo habitats around Thane Creek.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy commented on his visit, saying it was great to be in India and visit an Amazon Now micro-fulfilment centre in a busy area of Mumbai. He described the quick-delivery service for items like groceries, shampoo, and baby products, which are picked and delivered within minutes of ordering. Jassy noted that Prime members triple their shopping frequency once they start using the service, and orders have doubled every quarter since launch.

Jassy added that Amazon Now is the company's fastest-growing ecommerce business unit in India, and it is expanding to 300 cities as part of plans to build the country's largest delivery-in-minutes network. He said lessons learned from building this service in India are now helping Amazon scale it in the US and globally.

Regarding gig workers, Jassy mentioned investments to support delivery associates, including expanding air-conditioned rest centres to 250 across the country (open to anyone in the industry), education scholarships for their children, and upgraded insurance.
