80th Independence Day: PM Modi Calls for 'Har Ghar Tiranga' Participation
With the 80th Independence Day approaching on August 15, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens to join the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, an initiative aimed at encouraging every household to display the national flag. In a video shared on Instagram, Mr. Modi said, “On this Independence Day, let us celebrate the Tricolour at every home, in every heart.”
The call comes as part of a broader effort to instil a sense of patriotism and national pride among Indians. The campaign, which was first launched in 2022, has gained widespread participation across the country, with citizens hoisting the flag at their residences, workplaces, and public spaces.
On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parliamentary party group demonstrated their support for the campaign by waving the national flag during their weekly meeting, held at the Parliament House complex. The meeting, referred to as 'Mangal Milan' (auspicious meeting), takes place every Tuesday when Parliament is in session.
As Prime Minister Modi entered the venue, NDA MPs and Union Ministers greeted him by waving the Tricolour and raising slogans of “Vande Mataram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”. The gathering included Ministers, NDA leaders, and MPs from the coalition's constituent parties.
During the meeting, Union Minister for Jal Shakti, C.R. Paatil, delivered a presentation on the ministry's various initiatives. The Jal Shakti Ministry is responsible for formulating policy guidelines and programmes for the management of water as a national resource, as well as coordinating planning for the diverse uses of water across the country.
The meeting was attended by several prominent leaders, including Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Nabin, and Union Ministers Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Nitin Gadkari, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and S. Jaishankar. Additionally, Ministers from NDA constituent parties were present, such as H.D. Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S), Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Ramdas Athawale of the Republican Party of India-Athawale (RSP-A), Praful Patel of the Ajit Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Upendra Kushwaha of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM), and Satabdi Roy, a rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP now associated with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).
The 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign holds particular significance this year as the nation celebrates the 80th anniversary of its independence. The initiative not only encourages citizens to display the flag but also aims to deepen their connection with the values and history of the country. Schools, colleges, government offices, and residential societies have been actively participating, with many organising cultural events and flag-hoisting ceremonies.
The monsoon session of Parliament, which commenced on July 20, 2026, is scheduled to conclude on August 13. The session has witnessed discussions on various legislative and policy matters, and the NDA meeting served as a platform for the coalition to align on key issues ahead of the final days of the session.
