A 41-year-old farm labourer from Yallapur taluk in Uttara Kannada district has died of H1N1 infection at a private hospital in Mangaluru, health officials confirmed on Monday.

The man, who worked as a farm labourer, initially developed fever and sought treatment at a private clinic. When his condition worsened, he was admitted to a private hospital in Sirsi on June 17. Subsequently, he developed breathing complications and was transferred to a private hospital in Mangaluru for advanced care, where tests confirmed H1N1 infection.

Dr. Narendra Pawar, Yallapur taluk health officer, stated that the patient passed away on June 21. Following the confirmation of swine flu, health officials contacted the family members and advised them to take precautionary measures, including wearing masks and monitoring for symptoms.

H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, is a seasonal influenza virus that can cause respiratory illness. Health authorities emphasise the importance of early detection, vaccination, and hygiene practices to prevent spread. The district health department has initiated contact tracing and surveillance in the affected area.

This incident highlights the continued presence of H1N1 in the region and the need for public awareness regarding symptoms and preventive actions. The deceased's family has been provided with necessary guidance and support.
