Wife of TMC leader Jahangir Khan arrested in alleged plot to storm police station
The West Bengal Police have arrested Rejina Bibi, the wife of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jahangir Khan, on charges of planning an attack on the Falta police station. Bibi, also known as Sarina, was taken into custody from Bishnupur in South 24 Parganas district late on Friday night, according to police sources.
Her arrest follows the June 8 detention of her husband, Jahangir Khan, by a Special Task Force near the India-Nepal border. Khan, a TMC leader from Diamond Harbour, was arrested in connection with multiple cases, including allegations of extortion and land grabbing.
Police sources said that Bibi was allegedly plotting to storm the Falta police station to secure Khan's release. She has been booked under relevant sections of the Arms Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A senior police officer stated, "She will be produced in court shortly."
On June 16, a group of men and women had staged a protest outside the Falta police station against Khan's arrest and attempted to force their way inside. Police used force to disperse the crowd. It is in connection with this incident that Bibi has been implicated.
Jahangir Khan, often described as a local strongman, has a history of criminal cases. His arrest and the subsequent protests have drawn attention to the political landscape in West Bengal, where the TMC has been in power since 2011. The opposition parties have criticised the state government for what they call a soft approach to leaders with criminal backgrounds, while the TMC maintains that the law is taking its course.
The case is currently under investigation, and further details are awaited as the legal process unfolds.
