DMK youth wing alleges Udhayanidhi's arrest politically motivated, says aimed at silencing opposition
Chennai, August 4, 2026: The DMK youth wing on Tuesday condemned the arrest of its leader and Leader of the Opposition, Udhayanidhi Stalin, alleging that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government resorted to the action to avoid responding to questions he had raised over its handling of the Cauvery water dispute.
In a statement, the youth wing claimed the arrest reflected the government's “helplessness”. It asserted that Mr. Udhayanidhi did not refer to any individual in his speech, and that others were twisting his remarks by calling them vulgar or containing double entendres.
“As it is not in a position to answer the questions to be raised by the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly session, the government has chosen to arrest him instead,” the statement said.
The youth wing also drew a comparison with films starring Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, alleging that if the dialogues from his movies were compiled, they would contain language far more objectionable than Mr. Udhayanidhi's speech. “Even in his last film, he uttered swear words,” the statement claimed.
It further accused the TVK of failing to condemn Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nainar Nagenthran for allegedly making remarks linking an actor with the Chief Minister.
The DMK youth wing maintained that the arrest was politically motivated and intended to divert attention from the State government's response to the Cauvery issue.
Udhayanidhi Stalin, the son of former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, was arrested earlier on Tuesday. The exact charges against him have not been officially detailed at the time of this report. The TVK government has not yet issued a formal response to the youth wing's allegations.
The Cauvery water dispute is a long-standing issue between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the sharing of river water. The DMK has repeatedly criticised the TVK government for its handling of the matter, demanding a more assertive stance in securing Tamil Nadu's share.
