WhatsApp clarifies new username feature: optional, protected, and not searchable

In response to growing safety concerns, WhatsApp has officially clarified details about its upcoming 'Username' feature, emphasising that the feature will be entirely optional, protected by default, and not searchable by default. The clarification comes after users and privacy advocates raised questions about potential misuse and unwanted contact.

According to a statement from WhatsApp, users will have the choice to set a username, which can be used as an alternative way for others to reach them without sharing their phone number. Importantly, usernames will not be searchable through the app's search function. Instead, users must share their username directly with a contact for that person to initiate a conversation using it.

WhatsApp also confirmed that usernames will be protected by the same end-to-end encryption that secures all messages, calls, and media on the platform. The company reiterated that it does not have access to the content of any communication, including those initiated via username.

This feature is currently in development and is expected to roll out in a future update. WhatsApp has not provided a specific timeline. The move is seen as part of a broader effort to enhance user privacy and control, while still maintaining the platform's core functionality.

Privacy experts have welcomed the clarification, noting that the optional and non-searchable nature of usernames addresses many initial concerns. However, they advise users to remain cautious about sharing their username publicly, as it can still be used to contact them directly.

WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, has faced increasing scrutiny over privacy practices in recent years. The introduction of usernames is one of several features aimed at giving users more control over their personal information.
