Wedding Bus Plunges Into Tank Near Rajapalayam: 2 Dead, 58 Injured

Two people were killed and 58 others injured when a private bus carrying a wedding party overturned and fell into an irrigation tank near Dhalavaipuram on Saturday night, police said.

The deceased were identified as A. Selvam (55) and K. Kamatchi (50), both from Kunnoor. The injured were taken to the Government Hospital in Rajapalayam for treatment.

According to police, the wedding party had travelled from Kunnoor to Ilanthiraikondan near Dhalavaipuram to bring the bride. The bus had covered barely two kilometres from the bride’s house when the driver, Gopalakrishnan (28), lost control while negotiating a sharp turn on a narrow road. The vehicle plunged into the tank around 10:30 p.m.

Police and local residents rescued the injured from the wreckage. Social Welfare Minister K. Jegadeshwari visited the hospital where the injured were being treated. District Collector N.O. Sukhaputra and Superintendent of Police Gautam Goyal also met the injured.
