Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Appeals for UDF Support as Landslide Rescue Operations Continue

Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi has appealed to the United Democratic Front (UDF) to provide support as rescue operations remain in full swing following a devastating landslide in the region. The landslide, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, has caused significant damage to property and disrupted normal life in several villages.

In a statement released from her office, Gandhi said, 'I appeal to the UDF to extend all possible assistance to the rescue teams and affected families. The situation is critical, and we need a coordinated effort to ensure timely relief.' She also praised the efforts of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police, and volunteers who are working tirelessly to rescue trapped individuals and provide medical aid.

The landslide struck the hilly terrain of Wayanad district, known for its susceptibility to such disasters during the monsoon season. Preliminary reports indicate that at least 12 houses have been damaged, and several roads have been blocked by debris. Officials have confirmed that rescue teams are using heavy machinery to clear the rubble and establish access routes.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has also assured full state support, directing the district administration to expedite relief measures. Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rainfall in the region over the next 48 hours, raising concerns about further landslides.

Priyanka Gandhi, who was elected from Wayanad in the 2024 general elections, has been actively monitoring the situation. She has urged political parties to set aside differences and focus on humanitarian efforts. 'This is not the time for politics. We must unite to save lives,' she added.

The UDF, led by the Indian National Congress, has responded positively to the appeal. Senior UDF leader and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy confirmed that party workers have been deployed to assist in rescue and relief operations. 'We are fully committed to supporting the people of Wayanad in this hour of crisis,' Chandy said.

Authorities have set up temporary shelters for displaced families and are distributing food, water, and medical supplies. The district administration has also established a control room to coordinate rescue efforts and provide information to the public.

This landslide comes as a grim reminder of the recurring natural disasters that affect the Western Ghats. Environmentalists have called for stricter regulations on construction and mining in ecologically sensitive areas to prevent future tragedies.
