Wayanad debris slip: Three dead, five missing; CM to visit site as search intensifies

A day after a debris slip at a tunnel construction site in Wayanad district claimed three lives, search operations continued on Wednesday (July 8, 2026) to locate five individuals still missing. The incident occurred on Tuesday, triggering a landslide that trapped workers at the site.

Wayanad Superintendent of Police Devamanohar told reporters that a case of unnatural death has been registered and an investigation launched. “We have deployed cadaver dogs, fire force personnel, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams. The area has been divided into four zones to expedite the search,” he said.

Officials confirmed that downstream areas of the river are also being searched, and the road towards Chooralmala has been cleared. The cause of the debris slip is under investigation, with preliminary reports suggesting heavy rainfall and ongoing construction work may have contributed to the incident.

The debris slip occurred at the tunnel road construction site in the hilly terrain of Wayanad, a region prone to landslides during the monsoon season. Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan is scheduled to visit the site later today to assess the situation and meet with affected families.

Rescue teams are working under challenging conditions, with intermittent rain hampering efforts. NDRF personnel are using specialised equipment to navigate the debris, while cadaver dogs have been brought in to assist in locating any bodies. The police have urged the public to avoid the area and cooperate with authorities.

The incident has raised questions about safety protocols at construction sites in ecologically sensitive zones. Environmental activists have previously flagged concerns about large-scale infrastructure projects in the Western Ghats, which are prone to soil erosion and landslides. However, officials have stated that a thorough inquiry will determine the exact cause.

Local residents have expressed grief and anger over the loss of lives, with many questioning the delay in issuing warnings about the unstable slope. “We had been noticing cracks for days, but no action was taken,” said a local shopkeeper, requesting anonymity. The district administration has not commented on these claims.

The search operation is expected to continue until all missing persons are accounted for. The state government has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Further updates are awaited as the CM’s visit and investigation progress.
