Waterlogging Sparks Political Tussle in Delhi as CM Inspects on Bus
Heavy rainfall on Tuesday led to waterlogging in several parts of Delhi, triggering a political exchange between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj posted a video on X showing schoolchildren being carried through waist-deep water in Sadar Bazar, accusing Chief Minister Rekha Gupta of failing to address the issue.
In response, Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra said that waterlogging had occurred every monsoon for the past 27 years except in 2025, and that the BJP government had made significant progress. He claimed that 75% of the city had seen improvement and assured that after 2027, prolonged waterlogging would be a thing of the past.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta travelled by a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus to assess the situation. She began from her camp office in Civil Lines and visited the DDA Sports Complex in Rohini via Outer Ring Road and Madhuban Chowk. She reviewed waste disposal operations at landfill sites and instructed officials to strengthen the drainage system to prevent waterlogging.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported 32.4 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, and 57.6 mm during the day till 5:30 p.m. Generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain are expected on Wednesday.
