Water Woes in Delhi: Taps Run Dry or Supply Contaminated, Residents Allege
In Northwest Delhi's Zakhira locality, rows of plastic drums and buckets line the roadside as residents wait desperately for a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) tanker. This has been the daily routine for residents of Amar Park, who say the taps have been dry for six months. Even when water does come, it is highly contaminated.
The DJB's overall water production remains below peak demand this summer due to reduced output at key water treatment plants. A few kilometres away in West Delhi's Sultanpuri, similar water shortage concerns plague the area.
Locals allege that the shortage is compounded by poor water quality. Complaints of dark, foul-smelling water occasionally flowing through household taps have been reported. 'The pipeline supply has been stopped for nearly two years,' said Iqbal Chaudhary, 30, a resident of W Block.
Residents rely on tankers for their daily water needs, but the supply is irregular and often insufficient. The situation highlights the ongoing water crisis in parts of Delhi, where demand outstrips supply, especially during the summer months.
