Waste fire at BPCL's Tondiarpet facility extinguished, no casualties

A fire broke out on Monday afternoon at a godown storing empty cartons and old papers within Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd.'s (BPCL) lube packing facility in Tondiarpet, Chennai. The blaze was swiftly contained by the company's internal firefighting team, supported by four tenders from the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services.

According to BPCL sources, the fire was confined to the storage area and did not pose any risk to the adjacent Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) storage or the main lube plant. No loss of property or life has been reported. The Fire and Rescue Services Department confirmed receiving an alert at 2:41 p.m., and the fire was fully extinguished by 6 p.m.

Local resident Vadivelu noted that smoke from the fire rose high and was visible from nearby streets, but there was no panic as emergency response teams acted swiftly. The cause of the fire is under investigation, with preliminary reports suggesting it may have been accidental.

BPCL has stated that operations at the facility remain unaffected and that safety protocols are being reviewed to prevent such incidents in the future. The company is cooperating with authorities to determine the exact cause.

This incident highlights the importance of proper waste management and fire safety measures in industrial zones. The prompt response by BPCL and fire services ensured minimal disruption and no harm to personnel or nearby residents.
