Vijay's 'Jana Nayagan' Release Delayed Due to CBFC Delays, Then Leaked Online
Tamil actor and political party leader Vijay's final film before entering full-time politics, 'Jana Nayagan,' has faced significant hurdles. Originally scheduled for a Pongal release on January 9, 2026, the film's release was postponed because the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) took longer than expected to grant a censor certificate.
According to the film's production house, KVN Productions, an application for a censor certificate was submitted on December 18, 2025, under the Tatkal process. An examining committee watched the film on December 19 and recommended a U/A 16+ certificate subject to certain excisions. The producers carried out the cuts and resubmitted the film on December 24. However, the certificate was not issued in time for the planned January 9 release, leading to a legal dispute.
To compound the problem, on April 10, 2026, the film was reportedly leaked in high definition on piracy websites, with clips circulating on social media. Several prominent figures in the film industry condemned the leak and expressed solidarity with the film's team.
'Jana Nayagan' is directed by H. Vinoth and produced by K. Venkat Narayana. The film marks Vijay's 69th and final movie before he dedicates himself entirely to politics. The project was announced in August 2024 and began filming in October 2024. The title was revealed in January 2025 with posters showing Vijay recreating an iconic selfie and wielding a whip with the tagline 'Naan Aanai Ittaal.'
The film's audio launch took place on December 27, 2025, at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, where Vijay addressed fans, saying, "You all have built me a palace. Fans helped me build a fort… That’s why I’ve decided to stand for them." The trailer was released on January 3, 2026, and included multiple references to Vijay's political entry.
The delay in certification and the subsequent piracy have overshadowed what was meant to be a celebratory farewell for the star. The legal battle is ongoing, and a new release date has not been announced.
