Vignan University launches Centre of Excellence to boost sustainable Blue Economy

Vignan's University in Vadlamudi, Guntur district, has established a Centre of Excellence on Blue Economy with the theme "Sustainable Ocean–Thriving Future". The centre was inaugurated on Saturday, August 22, 2026, by Dr. Shailesh Nayak, Director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bengaluru.

The blue economy refers to the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and jobs, while preserving the health of marine ecosystems. The new centre will focus on coastal conservation, ocean technologies, blue growth, research, innovation, policy and skill development, aiming to become a hub for marine-related studies and enterprise.

Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Nayak stressed that sustainable utilisation of marine resources, while protecting the marine environment, is essential for future economic growth. He said the blue economy should be integrated with climate change, ecological balance and livelihoods, with environmental conservation and human safety remaining central. His remarks underline a growing recognition that ocean-based development must not come at the cost of the environment.

Dr. Srinivasa Kumar Tummala, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences, highlighted vast opportunities in fisheries, shipping, offshore and wave energy, tourism and logistics. He called for coordinated efforts by governments, industry and educational institutions to harness these resources, and urged students and start-ups to develop technological solutions that can contribute to the sector's growth.

Dr. T.M. Balakrishnan Nair, Director of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), emphasised the need to integrate ocean-based sectors. He said the centre should evolve into a regional hub for ocean science and skill development, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

As part of the initiative, Vignan's University and INCOIS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaboration in ocean observation, information systems, research, technology transfer and skill development. The MoU will also enable internships and hands-on training for students, bridging the gap between academic learning and practical applications.

Vignan's Institutions Chairman Dr. Lavu Rathaiah and Vice-Chairman Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu highlighted opportunities in offshore energy, marine biotechnology, aquaculture, fisheries, seaweed and marine minerals. They expressed confidence that the centre will play a key role in regional development and contribute to national priorities in the marine sector.

The establishment of the centre comes at a time when India is focusing on the blue economy as a vital component of sustainable development. With a long coastline and abundant marine resources, the country has significant potential to benefit from ocean-based industries while safeguarding ecological balance. The centre is expected to facilitate research collaborations, policy engagement and skill development, making it an important addition to the academic and scientific landscape in the region.
