VCK chief says no decision yet on alliance with TVK, keeps options open

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) founder and Chidambaram MP Thol. Thirumavalavan on Tuesday stated that his party has not yet finalised any alliance with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), casting uncertainty over the political alignment in Tamil Nadu.

Speaking to reporters, Thirumavalavan clarified that merely joining the Cabinet led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin does not imply that the VCK has formally aligned with the TVK-led front. 'Since the VCK’s letter of support was needed to form the government, we extended support from the outside. Only after 10 days, we decided to take part in the Cabinet,' he said.

He further explained that when asked about the party's current alliance status, he still considers the VCK part of the DMK alliance. 'There has been no decision taken regarding an alliance led by the TVK,' Thirumavalavan asserted.

The VCK leader added that on July 1, the Chief Minister spoke to the parties that extended support, but no final decision was taken. 'It means that the alliance led by TVK has not yet been formed,' he said.

Thirumavalavan expressed surprise at the DMK's decision to induct an office-bearer from the VCK into the Cabinet, stating that the move was unexpected.

The VCK, a party representing Dalit interests, has been a longtime ally of the DMK. The TVK, led by actor Vijay, emerged as a new political force in the state, and its potential alliance with the VCK could reshape Tamil Nadu's political landscape. However, Thirumavalavan's remarks indicate that no binding agreement has been reached.

Political analysts note that the VCK's stance could be a strategic move to maintain flexibility ahead of the next assembly elections. The DMK, which currently leads the ruling coalition, may need to reassess its relationship with the VCK if the latter leans towards the TVK.

Thirumavalavan's comments come amid ongoing realignments in Tamil Nadu politics, with smaller parties weighing their options between existing alliances and new formations.
