Uttarakhand on Alert as Heavy Rains Swell Garhwal Rivers
Continuous rainfall in Uttarakhand's Garhwal division has prompted authorities to remain on alert as water levels in major rivers continue to rise. The administration has issued advisories urging residents and pilgrims to exercise caution and avoid activities near riverbanks.
Garhwal Commissioner Anand Swaroop confirmed that multiple weather-related incidents have been reported during this monsoon season. "We are experiencing heavy monsoon rains. Since this is the disaster-prone monsoon season, various incidents are occurring, and water levels in all major rivers have risen significantly," he said.
The Commissioner stated that district administrations have been instructed to make regular public announcements, advising people not to go near riverbanks or engage in risky activities such as taking selfies near rivers. "Everyone is being made aware of this," he added, noting that efforts are underway to evacuate residents from vulnerable houses and shift them to safer locations.
River levels are currently high in Dehradun, particularly in the Tamsa, Tons and Asan rivers. The Rispana River is also flowing above normal levels due to heavy rainfall in the mountains. In some areas, daily rainfall has exceeded 200 mm, according to the Commissioner.
The Garhwal region, which hosts the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage, has seen significant rainfall this season. The Commissioner advised pilgrims to follow safety guidelines and remain cautious. Despite the weather, he said the yatra is proceeding safely. District Magistrates have the discretion to temporarily halt the pilgrimage, typically for around 12 hours, when conditions warrant such decisions.
"The Char Dham Yatra is running smoothly; around 8,000 to 9,000 pilgrims are visiting daily, and the total number of pilgrims so far exceeds last August's figures by 500,000," Swaroop said. The second phase of the yatra is scheduled to begin after September 15, when a larger influx of pilgrims is expected.
He noted that heavy rainfall can damage roads and other infrastructure, requiring reconstruction. Pilgrims are urged to follow instructions if their movement is temporarily stopped. The administration has established holding areas at various locations with basic facilities such as toilets and water supply. "We have established 'holding areas' at various locations where pilgrims can stay if necessary; facilities such as toilets and water supply have been provided there," he said.
The Commissioner advised pilgrims to remain in designated safe areas and continue their journey only when permission is granted by the authorities. The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be issued as necessary.
