Uttar Pradesh Deputy Lokayukta Seeks Minister's Reply Over Income-Asset Discrepancy

The Deputy Lokayukta of Uttar Pradesh has sought a response from State Minister Somendra Tomar and his wife following a complaint alleging discrepancies in their declared income and assets.

The complaint was filed by Amitabh Thakur, a Lucknow-based social activist and former Indian Police Service officer. According to Mr. Thakur, an analysis of affidavits filed during the 2017 and 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections shows that the couple's total declared income over that period was approximately ₹72 lakh. However, the increase in their movable and immovable assets during the same period was around ₹2.13 crore — nearly three times their declared income.

Mr. Thakur detailed that Mr. Tomar's declared income for the period was ₹43 lakh, while his wife's income was ₹29 lakh. In contrast, Mr. Tomar's assets grew by ₹1.85 crore and his wife's by ₹28 lakh, resulting in a combined asset increase of ₹2.13 crore. The activist has demanded an impartial, high-level inquiry into the sources of this alleged discrepancy.

Additionally, Mr. Thakur has called for an investigation into the role of Mr. Tomar as chairperson of the Shanti Niketan Trust. He alleged that the trust purchased land parcels measuring approximately 47,000 square metres, valued at ₹10.5 crore, in Kayasth Mavandi village between January 2023 and April 2025. He also pointed to other trusts linked to Mr. Tomar — Vinayak Educational Trust, Neelkanth Educational Trust, and Sai Educational Trust — and demanded a probe into their asset acquisitions.

The Deputy Lokayukta has now sought a response from the Minister and his wife. Further developments are awaited as the inquiry proceeds.
