US-Iran Talks Delayed as US Envoy Cancels Switzerland Trip
Planned talks between the United States and Iran have been postponed after US envoy JD Vance withdrew from a scheduled trip to Switzerland, diplomatic sources confirmed on Thursday. The delay marks a setback in efforts to de-escalate regional tensions.
The talks were intended to address ongoing disputes, including Iran's nuclear programme and its support for proxy groups. However, a key sticking point has been Iran's demand that any ceasefire agreement must include Lebanon, where its ally Hezbollah is based. Iran has consistently insisted that the situation in Lebanon cannot be separated from broader negotiations.
Israel has rejected this condition, arguing that its conflict with Hezbollah is distinct from its standoff with Iran. Hezbollah itself has also rejected the terms of the proposed deal between Iran and the United States, further complicating prospects for a comprehensive agreement.
Neither the US State Department nor Iranian officials have provided detailed reasons for the postponement. However, analysts suggest that the lack of progress on the Lebanon issue contributed to the decision to delay the meeting.
The cancellation of Vance's trip leaves the diplomatic process in limbo. Both Washington and Tehran have expressed willingness to continue dialogue, but no new date has been announced for the talks.
