Ceuta migrant tragedy: Death toll reaches 72 amid mass crossing
The death toll from the mass migrant influx into Spain's Ceuta enclave has risen to at least 72, local officials said on Sunday. The crossing, which took place between Wednesday and Friday, saw tens of thousands of people, mostly swimming around the border post from Morocco, enter Spain's North African territory.
Government delegate to Ceuta, Miguel Angel Perez Triano, told reporters that the latest figure is 72, an increase from the previously reported 67 deaths. Most of the estimated 60,000 people who rushed into the enclave have returned to Morocco voluntarily within 48 hours, and the territory is largely returning to normal.
On Sunday, Spanish police and troops patrolled the streets of Ceuta, with only small groups of migrants still present. Some were seen dozing on pavements, while others waited to be escorted back to the border. The border crossing itself was calm, with workers cleaning up clothes and rubbish left behind during the mass crossing.
The influx has caused an international crisis for Spain, with European Union partners criticising Madrid's immigration policies. Spain has blamed criminal gangs for spreading rumours that a recent Supreme Court ruling on immigration would allow migrants an easier path to passage.
The human cost is evident. An AFP reporter saw migrant minors in a disused industrial park in Ceuta. One adult at the site, Moroccan man Aziz Dabch, 41, said, "All the children here want to go to [mainland] Spain." Outside a housing project near Ceuta port, a group of nine tired migrants sat on the pavement under guard, with an armoured car nearby.
Ceuta is a small Spanish enclave on Africa's Mediterranean coast, one of two land borders between the European Union and Africa. This event is one of the largest mass crossings in the territory's history. The Spanish government has reinforced the area with a 500-metre floating boom extending into the sea to secure the border.
Moroccan officials have so far not made any statement on the crisis. The incident underscores the enduring challenges of migration policy and the need for cooperative solutions between Spain and Morocco.
As the enclave returns to a semblance of order, the focus remains on the lives lost and the ongoing humanitarian situation. The tragedy serves as a reminder of the risks many undertake in search of safety and opportunity.
