UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Resign After By-Election Loss, Party to Elect New Leader

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday announced his resignation, saying he would step down after a by-election setback that eroded confidence in his leadership. A new leader is expected to be in place by the time parliament returns in September.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said he accepted the judgment of his parliamentary party. "The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace," he said.

His resignation comes less than two years after he led the Labour Party to a landslide election victory, promising to bring stability after years of political turmoil. His departure will make him the seventh British leader in a decade, continuing a pattern of rapid turnover in UK politics.

Nominations for candidates to replace Starmer will open on July 9. According to party insiders, Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has emerged as the clear frontrunner, though other candidates are expected to enter the race.

The process to elect a new leader is expected to conclude before Parliament resumes in September. The new prime minister will face the challenge of restoring public trust and addressing pressing issues including the cost-of-living crisis and strained public services.

Starmer's resignation marks a dramatic reversal for a leader who was once seen as a unifying figure. His tenure was marked by internal party divisions and a series of by-election defeats that raised questions about his electoral strategy.

The Conservative Party, which Starmer defeated in 2024, has yet to comment on the development. Political analysts say the change in Labour leadership could shift the dynamics of the next general election, expected within two years.
