Parliament Deadlock: Opposition MPs Protest Over Ram Temple Donations, Student Clashes

Opposition Members of Parliament staged a protest inside the Parliament House complex on Thursday (August 6, 2026), demanding answers from the government on two contentious issues: the alleged misappropriation of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya and the police action against student protesters last week.

Braving rain, MPs from the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, among others, gathered near the Makar Dwar of Parliament carrying umbrellas and placards. They raised slogans such as 'Amit Shah jawaab do' and 'chanda chor kahan milenge, BJP ke daftar mein', and placed a donation box at the spot as a symbolic gesture to highlight the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple.

The demonstrators stood behind a large banner addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding accountability. A separate protest was also held by Samajwadi Party MPs earlier, focusing specifically on the alleged donation theft.

The broader Opposition, under the INDIA bloc umbrella, has resolved to press the government on both matters. In a meeting convened in the chamber of Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, floor leaders of INDIA bloc parties discussed their strategy. They vowed to corner the government on what they termed 'chhanda chori' (donation theft) and 'police excesses' against students.

Both Houses of Parliament have remained deadlocked over the Opposition's demands. In the midst of the uproar, most legislative business has been conducted amid din, with the government yet to formally respond to the specific allegations raised by the Opposition.

The protests come amid heightened political tensions, with the Opposition seeking to keep the spotlight on issues it believes resonate with the public. The government, for its part, has not issued an official statement on the allegations, leaving the parliamentary impasse unresolved.
