UK Appoints First AI Minister: Kanishka Narayan Takes New Cabinet Role
The United Kingdom has appointed its first Minister for Artificial Intelligence, Member of Parliament Kanishka Narayan. Narayan, who was born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India, and moved to Cardiff, Wales at age 12, will oversee the country's AI strategy.
On Thursday, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind and Nobel laureate, publicly praised the appointment. In a post on X, Hassabis wrote: 'Congratulations @KanishkaNarayan on your new role as UK's AI Minister in the Cabinet, great news for the UK AI ecosystem!' Hassabis, a UK citizen and son of immigrant parents, is a leading figure in artificial intelligence research.
Narayan stated that his first phone call after assuming the role was to Hassabis, with a focus on turning 'British advantage into British jobs.' He did not provide further details of the discussion.
Both Narayan and Hassabis have backgrounds in working-class families. Narayan has frequently spoken about his parents' struggles as immigrants in the UK, working minimum-wage and night-shift jobs.
Narayan's academic journey includes a scholarship to Eton College from a state-funded school in Cardiff, an undergraduate degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University, and an MBA from Stanford University.
His political career began with the Labour Party, inspired by his family's immigrant experience and a desire to improve public services. In 2022, he was selected as Labour's candidate for the Vale of Glamorgan in Wales, losing narrowly. Following Labour's return to power, Prime Minister Keir Starmer appointed him Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. This week, he was promoted to AI Minister, a newly created cabinet-level position.
