Trump says Netanyahu to visit US next week amid controversy over Schumer remarks

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will visit the United States next week. The announcement came during Trump's speech at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner.

Trump said Netanyahu would arrive on Monday and meet with him on Tuesday. Netanyahu's office confirmed the schedule, adding that the Prime Minister would also attend the funeral of the late US Senator Lindsey Graham.

During the dinner, Trump made remarks about Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, referring to him as "Palestinian" and joking about sending him a "beautiful Palestinian outfit." Schumer, who is Jewish, has previously been targeted by Trump with similar comments. Muslim and Jewish advocacy groups have criticised Trump for using the term "Palestinian" as a slur.

The visit comes as the US-Israel military campaign against Iran nears the five-month mark. No further details about the agenda of the Trump-Netanyahu meeting have been released.
