Trump says Iran requested further talks, US agrees, but ceasefire declared over
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday (July 10, 2026) that the United States has agreed to continue negotiations with Iran after Tehran requested further talks. However, he stressed that the June ceasefire between the two nations is no longer in effect.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue ‘talks.’ We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!” Mr. Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
This development comes after a week of mutual strikes. The Iranian armed forces launched attacks on U.S. military infrastructure in Gulf states on Thursday (July 9, 2026), following U.S. strikes on Iran's southern coastal and eastern provinces.
The two nations had reached an interim deal last month to end a four-month conflict that has severely impacted global energy supplies. Mr. Trump's inability to conclude the war has reportedly frustrated the President, as his Republican Party faces midterm elections later this year amid high gasoline prices and voter discontent.
