Trump Reportedly Seeks November Meeting with Kim Jong Un

Washington: US President Donald Trump has reportedly been urging his aides to arrange an in-person meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as early as this fall, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing unnamed US officials. The meeting, if it takes place, is expected to coincide with Trump's next trip to Asia, potentially in November when the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit is scheduled to be held in Shenzhen, China.

The Wall Street Journal, citing officials familiar with the matter, said Trump has privately discussed the possibility of meeting Kim during his trip. The report did not provide additional details about the agenda or the exact schedule. Reuters, which was not able to independently verify the report, reached out to the White House and the North Korean mission to the United Nations for comment but did not receive immediate responses.

A meeting between Trump and Kim would mark a resumption of personal diplomacy that has been suspended since 2019. The two leaders first met in Singapore in June 2018, followed by a second summit in Hanoi, Vietnam, in February 2019. The talks broke down after disagreements over denuclearisation steps and sanctions relief. A brief third meeting took place in June 2019 at the Demilitarized Zone separating the two Koreas, where Trump stepped across the border into North Korean territory, a symbolic move without substantive progress.

Since then, North Korea has continued to develop its missile and nuclear capabilities, despite international sanctions. In recent years, Pyongyang has conducted a series of missile tests, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, raising tensions in the region. The administration of President Joe Biden, which took office in January 2021, has repeatedly stated its willingness to engage in diplomacy with North Korea, but Pyongyang has largely ignored such overtures. Trump, who is running for a second term in the upcoming US presidential election, has boasted about his personal relationship with Kim and has suggested that his rapport could help restart talks.

If the meeting takes place in November around the APEC summit, it would be significant because it would occur in China, a key ally of North Korea. Beijing has traditionally played a mediating role in the Korean Peninsula issue. However, it is unclear whether the meeting would be a standalone event or a sideline to the APEC gathering. The report said Trump's aides are still working on the details and no final decision has been made.

Analysts note that a Trump-Kim meeting would likely focus on easing tensions, but there is little expectation of a breakthrough on denuclearisation. North Korea has repeatedly rejected the US demand to give up its nuclear weapons, which it sees as essential to its regime's survival. Any new summit would also raise questions about the direction of US policy toward North Korea, especially in the context of the presidential campaign.

The White House has not yet commented on the report. When asked about the possibility of a meeting during his previous term, Trump often expressed optimism but also acknowledged that progress had been limited. "I'm in no hurry," he said in 2019, adding that he liked Kim and that the relationship was good. However, critics have argued that the summits legitimised a dictator without delivering meaningful results.

The South Korean government, which has long sought to facilitate dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang, welcomed the possibility of renewed engagement. A spokesman for the South Korean presidential office said in a briefing that the government is closely monitoring the situation and hopes that any meeting contributes to peace on the Korean Peninsula. Meanwhile, Japan has expressed cautious support for dialogue, while stressing the need to address North Korea's missile and nuclear threats.

For now, the report remains unconfirmed. Both Washington and Pyongyang have yet to issue official statements. The timing of any such meeting would also depend on various logistical and political factors, including the APEC summit schedule and the security situation on the peninsula. Until then, the speculation underscores the potential for a dramatic diplomatic move in the midst of an election year.
