Union Ministers to visit universities daily under 'One Day, One University' outreach

The Union government has announced a new outreach initiative aimed at engaging with young Indians. Under the 'One Day, One University' programme, a Union Minister will visit a university every day to interact with students, listen to their concerns, and explain various government welfare schemes.

Officials familiar with the plan said the programme is designed to create a direct channel of communication between the government and the student community, which they describe as a key demographic in the country's development trajectory.

The announcement comes amid heightened focus on student issues following protests over the NEET-UG paper leak. Students had demonstrated at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and elsewhere, demanding a transparent examination process and accountability. The government has maintained that it is taking necessary action and has also launched a series of initiatives aimed at addressing youth concerns.

The 'One Day, One University' initiative was discussed at a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to sources. The ministries of education and youth affairs have been tasked with coordinating the visits.

India has a vast higher education landscape. According to the University Grants Commission (UGC), there are more than 1,300 universities in the country. This includes 57 central universities, 522 state universities, and the rest are deemed-to-be or private institutions. The programme will cover a broad spectrum of universities, ensuring that students from different types of institutions have the opportunity to interact with policymakers.

In recent weeks, the Prime Minister has also reached out to students through social media. His Independence Day address included several announcements aimed at the youth, such as free online coaching for competitive examinations, a national artificial intelligence skilling programme, and a sports talent hunt. These initiatives reflect the government's focus on expanding opportunities in emerging sectors like semiconductors, space technology, and manufacturing.

The new university visits are expected to serve as a platform for students to raise issues directly with ministers and to receive information about government programmes that they may benefit from. While the initiative has been seen by some as a positive step towards bridging the gap between the government and the youth, education experts emphasise the importance of sustained dialogue and tangible outcomes.

During these visits, ministers are expected to hold open sessions and encourage students to share their perspectives on education, employment, entrepreneurship, and other matters that affect their daily lives. The interaction will also serve as an opportunity for the government to gather feedback on existing policies and to understand the aspirations of the younger generation.

The government has not yet released a detailed schedule of the visits, but sources indicate that the programme will commence in the coming weeks. Ministers are expected to visit universities across the country, including in rural and semi-urban areas, to reach a diverse cross-section of students.

The move also comes at a time when the government is focusing on building a skilled workforce and promoting entrepreneurship among the youth. With a large population under the age of 35, the government is keen on harnessing the demographic dividend through education, skill development, and innovation.

As the programme rolls out, students and educators will be watching closely to see how it translates into concrete action. The success of the initiative, observers say, will depend on the quality of interaction and the responsiveness of the government to the concerns raised by students.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
