Trump Agrees to Iran Talks But Says Ceasefire 'Over' Amid Fresh Exchanges
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Friday that he had agreed to further negotiations with Iran, even as he reiterated that the ceasefire between the two nations is no longer in effect. The remarks come after two days of cross-border fire, raising fears of a return to full-scale regional conflict.
Just over three weeks after Washington and Tehran signed an agreement intended to transform a months-long ceasefire into a durable peace, the recent exchanges of fire have shattered the fragile calm. Iranian media reported that a delegation from mediator Qatar was in Tehran following the latest strikes.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue ‘talks.’ We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Friday.
There have been no direct talks between Iran and the United States since last month, but Qatari officials have been shuttling between the two sides. The situation remains highly volatile, with international observers urging restraint to prevent a wider war in the region.
