TMC MP Saugata Roy seeks Speaker's intervention for MPs' safety after Mahua Moitra attack

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saugata Roy has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, requesting his intervention to ensure the safety of Members of Parliament. This comes after TMC MP Mahua Moitra was allegedly attacked during a visit to her constituency in Nadia district, West Bengal, on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference in Delhi on Thursday, Roy said that Moitra was attacked when she visited her constituency. He claimed that Moitra immediately reported the matter to the Director General of Police, but the police remained silent spectators. Roy stated that Moitra refused to leave the area immediately and stayed until the situation eased.

Moitra had earlier livestreamed an alleged egg-pelting attack on her party office, accusing workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being responsible. The video shared on social media showed a group of people pelting eggs at the office.

No official statement from the police or the BJP has been released confirming or denying the allegations as of filing this report. The incident highlights concerns over the security of elected representatives amid political tensions in the state.
