TMC and BJP Supporters Clash at Kolkata Airport Before Abhishek Banerjee's Arrival

Kolkata, November 3: A confrontation between supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) occurred outside the arrival terminal of Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Friday evening, leading to temporary disruption and heightened police presence. The incident took place ahead of the scheduled arrival of TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee from Delhi.

According to law enforcement officials, a group of BJP workers had gathered near the terminal, reportedly carrying rotten eggs. Some TMC supporters alleged that individuals among the BJP group were armed with firearms, though police have not confirmed this claim. Upon learning of the gathering, TMC supporters arrived at the scene, leading to a heated exchange between the two groups.

Witnesses reported that the altercation involved pushing, shouting, and the use of objects such as helmets. Police personnel intervened to separate the groups and prevent further escalation. No injuries were reported, and no arrests were made immediately.

The clash caused temporary traffic congestion near the terminal, with vehicles forming long queues. App-based cab services were also affected as police personnel were diverted from regular duties to manage the crowd. Passengers exiting the airport expressed concern over the disruption.

Abhishek Banerjee left the airport at approximately 9:45 PM under heavy police escort. He boarded a waiting vehicle without addressing supporters or the media.

The incident underscores the ongoing political rivalry between the TMC and BJP in West Bengal, where both parties have frequently clashed during election campaigns and public events. Authorities have urged all political groups to maintain peace and adhere to legal norms.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved in the scuffle and may take further action if necessary. The airport authorities confirmed that flight operations were unaffected.
