Three Arrested in Killing of Dalit Man in Uttar Pradesh Village
Police in Sant Kabir Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, have arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of a 29-year-old Dalit man, an incident that sparked communal tension and protests in the Bakhira area. The arrests were made on Saturday, two days after the killing.
The victim was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon, allegedly by a man from another community. According to police, the main suspect, Nasir Ali (20), along with two others—Nirahu (21) and Jaigham (35)—have been taken into custody. All three were produced before a court, which remanded them to judicial custody.
Following the murder, the victim's family and other villagers placed the body on the road and staged a protest for several hours. The demonstration led to heightened tensions in the area. Some residents also set the main suspect's home on fire during the protests.
Station House Officer Uma Shankar of Bakhira police station confirmed the arrests, stating that Nasir Ali was named in the First Information Report (FIR). Police added that Nasir and Jaigham run a meat shop, while Nirahu operates a barber shop in the area.
The authorities have appealed for calm and assured that the investigation is proceeding. The arrests are seen as a step toward de-escalating the communal tensions that had arisen after the incident.
