Three Arrested for Abducting and Assaulting Two Minor Girls in Assam
Guwahati, August 5: Assam Police have arrested three men in connection with the alleged abduction and sexual assault of two minor girls from Mizoram. The incident was reported at Dholai Police Station in Cachar district in the early hours of August 3.
The accused have been identified as Amjad Hussain Laskar (20) of Rajnagar, Saddam Hussain Laskar (23) of Bhaga Bazar, and Rinku Das (25) of Khaspur, all residents of Cachar district.
According to a senior police officer, the two girls arrived at the police station at around 2:30 am and reported that they had been abducted and sexually assaulted. Additional Superintendent of Police Rajat Pal said the victims initially stated that the accused attempted to rape them, and later alleged they were gang-raped despite resisting.
“Since both claimed to be minors, we proceeded in accordance with the relevant legal provisions,” Pal said. The statements of the victims have been recorded, and they have undergone mandatory medical examinations, he added.
The police have registered a case under Section 70(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (gang rape of a woman under 18 years of age), Section 87 (abduction), and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, which deals with aggravated penetrative sexual assault.
The accused were produced before a court after the initial legal formalities were completed. The investigation is currently underway.
Legal experts note that the POCSO Act mandates stringent punishment for sexual offences against minors, and the judiciary typically fast-tracks such cases to ensure speedy justice. The police have assured that all procedures are being followed to protect the identities of the victims, as required under the law.
This incident highlights the continuing challenge of crimes against minors in the region, and authorities have emphasised the need for vigilance and prompt reporting. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
