Third Day of Heavy Rainfall Lashes Mumbai Region; Red Alerts Issued
Mumbai and its neighbouring districts experienced heavy rainfall for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, as the monsoon continued to affect the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for Palghar, Thane, and Raigad districts, indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall.
On Wednesday, several suburban pockets in Mumbai recorded over 100 mm of rainfall within an eight-hour period. The downpour led to waterlogging on roads, disrupted traffic, and caused the collapse of some homes and trees. No casualties have been reported as of now, but local authorities remain on high alert.
The IMD's red warning for Palghar is valid for Thursday, while Thane and Raigad districts are under a red alert from July 3 to July 4. In response, the district collector of Palghar declared a public holiday for all schools on Thursday. Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
Meteorologists attribute the sustained rainfall to an active monsoon trough and a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea. The weather system is expected to persist for the next few days, bringing more rain to the region. The civic authorities have deployed pumps and rescue teams to manage the situation.
The heavy rains come as a reminder of the city's vulnerability to flooding during the monsoon season. In previous years, similar downpours have caused significant disruption and damage. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged citizens to report any emergencies and stay updated with weather advisories.
