Mysterious deaths of 10 wild boars in Kasaragod prompt health and forest probe

At least 10 wild boars have been found dead in Vorkady panchayat on the Kerala-Karnataka border over the past two weeks, prompting concern among local residents and a multi-department investigation. The carcasses were discovered in areas including Poyya and Kalla Jail, with two more animals — including a large female — reported on Thursday.

Poyya ward member K.M. Malathi said 10 carcasses were found in the Poyya area alone. Locals suspect the actual number could be higher, as some deaths may have gone unreported in the scattered terrain. The first mass death was noticed about 15 days ago.

Officials from the Health, Animal Husbandry, and Forest departments have visited the site and conducted preliminary inspections. Serum samples from the dead animals have been sent to the Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in Kannur for detailed analysis to determine the cause of death.

Residents have urged authorities to ensure the carcasses are disposed of safely to avoid any health or environmental risks. Their concern is heightened by the recent detection of an H1N1 influenza case in the same panchayat, although there is no confirmed link between the two events.

Wild boar populations have been rising in parts of Kerala, leading to crop damage and conflicts. Mass deaths of this nature are unusual and warrant careful investigation. Veterinary experts say common causes could include infectious diseases such as African swine fever, poisoning, or environmental factors. The laboratory results are expected to clarify the situation.

Local authorities have been advised to maintain vigil and report any unusual animal deaths promptly. The Forest Department is also monitoring the area to prevent any possible spread of disease to other wildlife or domestic animals.
