Tharoor's Remarks on Modi's Role in Sailors' Issue Spark Congress-BJP Clash
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has triggered a political controversy after stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised concerns about Indian civilian sailors with US President Donald Trump. Tharoor's statement contradicts earlier claims by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that the government ignored the issue.
Speaking at an event, Tharoor acknowledged Modi's efforts in addressing the matter during his meeting with Trump. 'The Prime Minister did raise the issue of Indian sailors detained abroad, and that is a fact,' Tharoor said.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) quickly seized on Tharoor's remarks, using them to highlight differences within the Congress party. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said, 'Tharoor's praise for Modi shows that even Congress leaders recognise the Prime Minister's leadership on foreign policy issues. This exposes Rahul Gandhi's baseless allegations.'
Rahul Gandhi had earlier accused the Modi government of failing to secure the release of Indian sailors captured by pirates or detained in foreign countries. The Congress leader had claimed that the government showed 'complete apathy' towards the issue.
Tharoor's comments have put the Congress on the defensive, with party leaders trying to downplay the disagreement. Congress spokesperson Pramod Tiwari said, 'Tharoor was simply stating the fact that the matter was raised. It doesn't mean he endorses the government's overall handling of the issue.'
The political slugfest highlights the ongoing tensions within the Congress as it struggles to present a united front against the ruling BJP. Tharoor, known for his independent views, has often been at odds with the party leadership on various issues.
The sailors' issue concerns Indian nationals detained in countries like the UAE and Qatar. The government has maintained that it has taken diplomatic steps to secure their release.
