Telangana CM urges US to simplify H-1B visa, boost education ties
The Telangana government has formally taken up with the United States the difficulties faced by its residents in obtaining and renewing H-1B visas, a category that enables skilled professionals to work in America. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy met U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor in New Delhi on Wednesday and requested simplification of visa processing, renewal, and stamping procedures to avoid delays.
The Chief Minister emphasised that delays in these procedures cause hardships for professionals from Telangana employed in various sectors in the United States. He also asked that any changes in visa regulations be communicated in advance so that applicants can prepare accordingly.
Mr. Reddy sought an increase in the number of visas for students from Telangana who wish to pursue higher education in the U.S. He requested more interview slots and expeditious processing of visa applications, as well as the assistance of U.S. authorities in ensuring timely appointments.
The meeting also focused on the safety and welfare of Telangana students studying in the U.S. The Chief Minister took up concerns related to their well-being and called for continued cooperation on this matter.
On the economic front, Mr. Reddy highlighted the investment opportunities for American companies in Telangana, particularly in sectors such as information technology, artificial intelligence, life sciences, pharmaceuticals, startups, research, and cutting-edge technology. He said the State government is ready to partner with U.S. companies in these areas.
Mr. Reddy also proposed collaborations between American universities and educational institutions in Telangana. He suggested expanding student exchange, research, innovation, and skill development programmes between the two sides. The Chief Minister underlined the need to strengthen cooperation in education, employment, investments, technology, and research within the State.
Drawing attention to the growing presence of Telugu in the United States, the Chief Minister noted that it is one of the fastest-growing Indian languages in the country. He appreciated Mr. Gor for his understanding of India’s history and culture.
The U.S. Ambassador responded positively to the requests and assured full cooperation in further expanding trade, investments, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people ties between Telangana and the United States.
