Tear Gas Fired at Jantar Mantar Protest as Thousands Gather
Delhi's historic Jantar Mantar, usually a quiet observatory, became the epicentre of a massive protest on Saturday when thousands gathered to demand systemic change. The demonstration, which drew participants from across caste, class, religion, and gender lines, was initially peaceful, with attendees raising slogans, holding posters, and offering mutual aid.
However, the atmosphere turned chaotic in the afternoon when police fired tear gas canisters near the stage. Witnesses reported a sudden commotion, leading to panic and a stampede-like situation. Many people, including families with children, sought shelter in nearby buildings, including a church, as tear gas filled the air.
“We were overwhelmed by the gas. It stung our eyes and throats,” said a participant who requested anonymity. Volunteers quickly distributed water and masks, helping those affected. The incident prompted many to leave the protest site, while others remained, determined to continue.
The protest, organized by civil society groups, had been ongoing for days, with participants demanding a fairer system and responsive governance. Organizers claimed the gathering was peaceful and accused authorities of disproportionate force. Police officials did not immediately comment on the incident.
Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observatory built in the 18th century, has long been a site for peaceful protests in Delhi. Saturday’s event underscored the tensions between citizens exercising their right to assemble and law enforcement tactics.
