Tamil Nadu to study alcohol retail reforms: New panel to examine state models
The Tamil Nadu government, led by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has announced plans to form a high-level committee to study liquor retail models in other states. The move is part of ongoing reforms in the state-run liquor retail system, which have included shutting down outlets near schools and places of worship, cracking down on overcharging at Tasmac counters, and a 25% salary increase for workers.
Minister for Prohibition and Excise K. Vignesh confirmed that the committee would be formed soon. It will examine excise departments in Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha, focusing on liquor procurement, retail operations, and employee service conditions. Based on the findings, the government plans to address employee demands.
The committee will be established under the directions of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Tasmac, the state-run retail network, operates 4,048 outlets and generates approximately ₹150 crore daily in revenue.
