Tamil Nadu student group rallies to abolish NEET, dismantle NTA
The Tamil Nadu Students Youth Federation (TSYF) organised a rally on Sunday, demanding the permanent scrapping of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the dissolution of the National Testing Agency (NTA). The march proceeded from Pudupet to the Rajarathinam stadium in Chennai.
Participants carried placards with slogans such as 'Ban NEET' and 'Hand over education to states'. The rally also called for action against police officials accused of assaulting protesters at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, and for the withdrawal of First Information Reports (FIRs) filed against student activists.
The NTA, which conducts NEET and other entrance exams, has faced criticism over alleged paper leaks and mismanagement. The TSYF's demands reflect a broader opposition in Tamil Nadu to NEET, which many argue disadvantages students from rural and vernacular-medium backgrounds. The state government has repeatedly sought exemption from the exam, citing its impact on social equity.
The rally drew a significant number of participants, according to organisers. No untoward incidents were reported during the peaceful procession.
