Tamil Nadu Forms Safety Panel After Fatal Ammonia Leak Kills Five Workers
Tamil Nadu Labour Minister J. Mohamed Farvas announced on Monday (June 22, 2026) that the state government will immediately constitute a committee to inspect hazardous industries across the state and prevent future accidents.
Making a suo motu statement in the Legislative Assembly regarding the death of five women workers due to an ammonia gas leak at St. Peter and Paul Sea Food Exports Private Ltd. in Kannigaipair near Periyapalayam, Tiruvallur district, the Minister said Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has already ordered the formation of the committee.
“We are taking steps to constitute the committee immediately,” Farvas said.
The Minister added that the government will obtain reports from the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health, the Public Health Department, and the Member Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board within 24 hours.
“The Chief Minister has directed us to complete a detailed inquiry within three days,” he said.
The Chief Minister has announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh each to the families of the five women who lost their lives. The government will also bear the expenses of transporting the bodies to their native states and ensure the immediate release of provident fund (PF) and Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) benefits to the families, the Minister stated.
