Tamil Nadu CM Stalin Dismisses 'Actor's Party' Jab, Addresses Karur Stampede and CAA
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday delivered a strongly worded speech in the state assembly, countering opposition criticism that his Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is an 'actor's party' while addressing two pressing issues: the recent stampede in Karur and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
During the question hour, Stalin rejected the characterization, emphasizing the DMK's decades-long commitment to social justice and secularism. 'We are not here to perform on a stage but to serve the people of Tamil Nadu,' he said. The remark came after members of the opposition AIADMK and BJP made repeated references to the DMK's ties with film personalities.
The Chief Minister then turned to the Karur stampede, which occurred on March 8 during a temple festival, resulting in 10 fatalities and several injuries. He outlined the state government's immediate response, including financial compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased and free medical treatment for the injured. Stalin assured the House that a thorough investigation is underway and stricter crowd management protocols will be implemented.
On the CAA, Stalin reiterated the state government's firm opposition to the law, calling it 'discriminatory and divisive'. He noted that the DMK-led government has consistently refused to implement the act, citing constitutional concerns. 'We will not allow the CAA to be enforced in Tamil Nadu,' he declared, adding that the state has passed resolutions against it earlier.
The assembly witnessed heated exchanges as AIADMK members accused the DMK of politicizing the stampede. Stalin retorted by pointing out the previous AIADMK government's handling of similar disasters. The Speaker eventually restored order, allowing the session to proceed.
Observers note that Stalin's speech aimed to consolidate his party's base amid growing criticism from the BJP and AIADMK. The focus on the CAA aligns with the DMK's secular stance, while the stampede response highlights administrative efficiency. Political analyst Dr. S. Venkataraman said, 'The CM is trying to shift the narrative from anti-incumbency to governance and ideology.'
