Supreme Court dismisses plea for probe into Tamil Nadu trust vote, calls allegations 'vague'
The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition seeking an investigation into alleged irregularities during the trust vote in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly held on May 13, 2026. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice V. Mohana refused to entertain the plea, describing the allegations as 'vague, wild and casual' and lacking reliable material to support them.
The trust vote was won by the government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay of the TVK party. The government secured a comfortable majority with the support of 25 rebel MLAs from the AIADMK, while the DMK chose to walk out of the assembly. Although the TVK did not have a majority on its own, it formed a coalition with the Congress, VCK, CPI, CPI(M) and IUML, gathering 120 MLAs, crossing the required 118 mark in the 234-member assembly.
The opposition had accused the government of horse-trading to secure the vote of confidence, allegations that Mr. Vijay has denied. The Supreme Court's dismissal effectively closes the legal avenue for a probe into the trust vote, unless fresh evidence emerges.
