Karnataka Cabinet Expansion: Congress Approves 20 MLAs; Speaker, Deputy Speaker Nominees Named

The Congress high command has approved the inclusion of 20 legislators in the Karnataka cabinet, clearing the way for a much-anticipated expansion of the state ministry. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar received the official list of approved names on August 3, ending weeks of speculation about the timing and composition of the new team.

The approval comes as the Congress government, in power since May 2023, works to fill vacant ministerial berths. The cabinet expansion is part of the party's efforts to ensure wider regional and social representation, with the chosen legislators hailing from various districts and communities across the state.

The approved legislators for cabinet positions are: P.M. Narendraswamy, Shivaraj Tangadagi, Rudrappa Lamani, K.S. Basavanthappa, B. Nagendra, T. Raghumoorthy, B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan, Rizwan Arshad, Santosh Lad, Madhu Bangarappa, Putturangashetty, Mankala Vaidya, Ajay Singh, N. Chaluvaraya Swamy, K.M. Shivalinge Gowda, H.C. Balakrishna, Gayathri Shanthegowda, Basavaraj Rayareddi, Vijayanand Kashappanavar, and Laxman Savadi.

In addition to the cabinet berths, the Congress high command has also approved candidates for the posts of presiding officers in both houses of the state legislature. For the Legislative Assembly, G.S. Patil has been nominated for Speaker and A.S. Ponanna for Deputy Speaker. For the Legislative Council, Saleem Ahmed has been nominated for Speaker and Umashree for Deputy Speaker.

The newly appointed ministers and the proposed presiding officers are expected to be sworn in on August 3 in Bengaluru. In view of the ceremony, the Bengaluru traffic police have issued an advisory for motorists, urging them to plan their routes and expect diversions around the venue.

This expansion is seen as a strategic move by the Congress to strengthen its government in Karnataka. It comes at a time when the state is gearing up for several important policy initiatives and legislative sessions. The inclusion of experienced legislators and representatives from diverse backgrounds is aimed at broadening the government's appeal and addressing regional aspirations.

The swearing-in ceremony is likely to be attended by senior Congress leaders and state functionaries. The new ministers will be assigned portfolios by the Chief Minister, though no official announcement has been made yet on portfolio allocation. Political observers note that the expansion reflects the high command's effort to balance various caste and regional equations within the state unit, a crucial factor in Karnataka's complex political landscape.

The Congress party, which won a decisive mandate in the 2023 assembly elections, has been functioning with a limited ministry since the formation of the government.
