Student protest called off after India's education minister resigns over exam paper leaks
A student-led protest in India against alleged irregularities in medical entrance exams has been called off after the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protest, which lasted nearly five weeks, had drawn widespread support across the country.
The protest, organised by the Centre for Justice and Peace (CJP), began after a key medical exam was cancelled due to reported paper leaks. Students demanded a thorough investigation and the resignation of the minister. The movement gained momentum after a violent crackdown on July 20, when police and paramilitary forces used batons and tear gas to disperse protesters. About 300 people were taken to hospital, and 70 protesters were arrested, most of whom were later released on bail.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke his silence on the issue on Thursday, announcing plans to set up fast-track courts for swift punishment in paper leak cases. Later that night, he said a tough new law on examination paper leaks was being prepared and would be introduced in parliament soon.
Following the minister's resignation, CJP founder Dr. A. Dipke said the fight was not over. He called for compensation for families of students who died by suicide after the exam cancellation and for action against police officers accused of using excessive force. Dipke's statement included the phrase, 'Remember, do not mess with [the] cockroach,' a reference to the protest's earlier name, but the core demands remain focused on accountability and justice.
The protest's end marks a significant concession by the government, which has previously faced large-scale demonstrations, including the 2021 farmers' protest that led to the repeal of three agriculture laws. The students' movement resonated with middle-class Indians across religious and caste lines, reflecting widespread anger over limited educational and job opportunities.
The government has yet to announce a timeline for the new anti-cheating law or details of the fast-track courts. The opposition has welcomed the resignation but called for a full parliamentary inquiry into the exam leaks and police conduct.
