Soni Razdan on Being Overlooked by Shyam Benegal: 'I Didn't Fit His Prototype'

Veteran actor Soni Razdan has opened up about her experience working within the parallel cinema movement of the 1970s and 1980s, revealing that she was often overlooked for leading roles in Shyam Benegal's films because she did not fit the director's preferred 'prototype' of actresses like Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil.

Razdan, who is of German and Indian heritage, said her appearance was considered an anomaly compared to Benegal's established muses. In an interview, she stated, 'The way I looked, especially in those days, was a complete anomaly to the Smita-Shabana prototype. I guess that was what he wanted.'

Benegal, who died in 2023, was a pioneering figure in Indian parallel cinema. He frequently cast Azmi and Patil as leading ladies, while other talented actors such as Deepti Naval, Ratna Pathak Shah, Supriya Pathak, and Neena Gupta—key members of the movement—had limited opportunities to work with him in prominent roles.

Razdan acknowledged that her chances were slim from the start due to her mixed-race background, noting that Benegal's preference for a certain 'look' effectively sidelined many accomplished actors. Her remarks highlight the narrow casting choices that often characterized even progressive film movements.

The actor's candid reflection offers insight into the dynamics of the parallel cinema era, where despite its artistic ambitions, certain biases persisted. Razdan, who has appeared in numerous films and television shows, continues to be an admired figure in Indian cinema.
