Six Nihang Sikhs Occupy Uttarakhand Gurdwara Rooftop, Talks Underway
A group of Nihang Sikhs has occupied the rooftop of a gurdwara in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand, following an altercation with the gurdwara's sewadars (volunteers). Police and local administration are engaged in negotiations with the group, which has been on the rooftop since Saturday afternoon.
According to Superintendent of Police Rudraprayag, Niharika Tomar, the incident began when the sewadars of the Nagrasu Gurdwara and a group of Nihang Sikhs had a disagreement. Seven individuals then went to the rooftop, closing the door behind them. As of Sunday evening, six remain on the rooftop, while one has come down to speak with authorities.
“They had an altercation at the gurdwara and went to the rooftop and closed the door. The administration and police are trying to speak to them. One of them has come down, and we are listening to their grievances. The talks have yielded positive results. Efforts are ongoing to engage with the remaining individuals,” said Tomar.
No injuries or violence have been reported. The Nihang order is a traditional Sikh warrior sect known for their distinctive blue attire and turbans. The authorities are handling the situation with sensitivity to religious sentiments, and the focus remains on a peaceful resolution.
