Shiv Sena (UBT) corporator disqualified after caste certificate invalidated

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday disqualified Shiv Sena (UBT) corporator Deepak Sawant, representing Ward No. 111 in Kanjurmarg. The disqualification followed the state government’s caste scrutiny committee invalidating the caste certificate he submitted while filing his nomination for the civic elections, citing forgery.

In a similar case, the caste certificate of All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) corporator Shameer Ramzan Patel, who represents Ward No. 137 in Govandi, was also invalidated by the committee. However, his disqualification has been stayed after the Bombay High Court granted him interim relief.

The disqualification reduces the strength of the Shiv Sena (UBT) in the BMC, while the ruling Mahayuti alliance, comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena, holds a majority. The BMC is the municipal corporation governing Mumbai, India's financial capital.
